Competencies

By: Natalie Lind

Q. I need to improve the competencies we use in our department. Does IAHCSMM have a list of general competencies I can use?

A. Every Sterile Processing (SP) department must use competencies as a part of employee orientation and training. Simply defined, competency in sterile processing means having the skills and knowledge to perform specific assigned duties as required. Developing competencies can pose a challenge for every department. Managers often ask if a template exists that can be used for every department.

Unfortunately, general competencies that will work for every department do not exist due to the variations in equipment, instruments, and systems. If competencies are a challenge for your department, IAHCSMM has a webinar on developing competencies that provides good information on competency development. It’s worth 1 Contact Hour of CE and is free to members. Click here to view the webinar.

We also have a Lesson Plan on competencies: “Implementing a Departmental Education, Training and Competency Program”. Click here to view the lesson plan.

We also have some examples of competencies in the sample documents section of our website. Just log in as a member and you will be able to access them. Please note, these documents were provided by different facilities and should serve as examples, not actual competencies for your facility. They are in customizable documents, so if you choose to incorporate them into your system, they are easy to change. Click here to visit the page.

Developing good competencies requires effort, but the results are worth it!
