On September 9th, 2017, The Massachusetts Chapter of Central Sterile Professionals partnered with DePuy Synthes and planned a first of its kind “hands-on” seminar for the area. DePuy Synthes was gracious enough to open their doors and hosted the event at their beautiful facility located in Raynham, MA. Dr. Gerry McDonnell, Cathy Rocco, and Michael Quinn did a fabulous job presenting and engaging the audience.
Craig Wencis, the WW Clinical Relations Manager, Sandy Morrow, Alex Freilich, Brendan McGill were absolutely amazing in the hands-on session, by showing the Central Sterile staff how the equipment is used, and then turning it over to them in a very welcoming and encouraging fashion. The rest of the DePuy Synthes staff were on point to guide Central Sterile Professionals through the facility as well as provide AV support. DePuy Synthes had several workshops setup to support the all the attendees. Nearly every attendee was completely engaged in the workshops, a lot of them seeing how equipment (that they’ve been processing for years) was used in surgery for the first time. The event was met with rave reviews and the common theme amongst the reviews received back from the attendees was “more seminars like this!”
One of the systems DePuy Synthes featured for the demonstration was their Spine Vectra system. Attendees were able to practice their L2-L5 fusions by inserting pedicle screws and affixing titanium rods to them. The education team had skeletal simulation devices setup in the each of the workshops. Alongside the DePuy Synthes Spine Vectra hands-on session, were the trauma workshops where distal radius plates with attached and trochanteric nails inserted. Attendees got very up close and personal with the equipment on display and chatter like “that’s why this thing is so dirty all the time” after seeing how devices were assembled, positioned, and used perioperatively was heard repeatedly. A lot of the hands-on sessions were on a “live feed” on the MCCSP Facebook Page and website.
This type of seminar was a “first” for the MCCSP, but most certainly not the last. This was all made possible by DePuy Synthes as well as all of our sponsors, to whom which we are eternally grateful!
