I have been out of the SPD field for a few years, but my understanding is that there is a new recommendation that peel pouches not be used inside instrument trays. What do you all use for containing small items inside trays?

Since peel packs can not be used inside wrapped trays due to questionable sterility, a company has come out with all paper "peel packs" of different sizes that work well and contain small items in trays.

This sounds interesting. Do you know which company has the paper packs?

Its been awhile but I'm glad to be back. Regarding the peel pouches in trays & containers according to AAMI 5.6.2.4 Paper/plastic pouches 'it is inadvisable to use paper/plastic pouches within wrapped sets or containers because thepouches cannot be positioned to ensure adequate air removal, steam contact and drying.' It also recommends to look at utilizing small perforated baskets for small items.
I have had and will most likely have more run ins and questions about this. What I have found is the use of peel pouches in trays can get way out of hand. Not only are the utilized to keep smal items together but i have seen them use to hold like items, i.e. pick, rakes, needle holders etc. I do believe that the contents of these trays need to be reviewed and, in many cases, revised to see if seperate smaller trays can be developed or can the items be removed altogether.
Hope this helps or gives you soemthing to think about!

Thanks to CPD guy, I have now tried the paper bags in trays. I haven't heard any feedback yet on it. What I am hearing is that the surg.techs want their small isntruments in the foam that have individual pockets and roll up. But, I still think the little paper bags would be great for really small items.
Thanks everyone for your input on this.
:)
