Hello,
My hospital is looking at changing our current Loaner Policy. We (OR and SP) feel that we do not have a good policy in place now and want to get more specific and detailed. Currently, we are asking reps to have instruments to our facility no later than 3 hours prior to an urgent case and the day before for an elective/scheduled case. All sets coming into our facility must go through the SP's processes first. The problems we are running into are (1) I feel SP needs more than 3 hours to process loaners (or any set, for that matter). (2) We want reps having loaners to us 24 hours prior to the scheduled case with the Company's cleaning, processing, and sterilization instructions every time that set(s) is brought into our hospital. OR and SP can agree on that loaners should be brought in 24 hours prior to any scheduled elective case with instructions each time. What we do not agree on is the time it takes to process a set from the time it enters the department's decontam until the time it is cool enough to release to OR. Can anyone help me with how long it takes to turn instruments around in your area (average time) and what your loaner policy is?

To allow for wash, assembly, sterilize and cool to touch, we quote a minimum 4 hour turn. Anything within that time will not be processed by our department.
For a loaner policy, IAHCSMM and ASHCSP has a joint policy paper, try this link:
