View Full Version : Printing Surgical Case Cards
Hey all!
I was wondering what your hospitials' procedures are for printing surgical case cards. Who prints them? Who checks to make sure they are the correct procedure? We have some issues to work out with our surgery scheduling system, and I would love to know what others have found that works well (or not so well). I am especially interested to learn how you all handle emergency cases and add-ons.
Any insight you can give would be greatly appreciated.

We are currently using Per Se ORSOS software for scheduling.
All scheduling, preference card and pick sheet maintenance is handled by surgery folks.
I pick up the daily surgery schedule, the next day's schedule, pick sheets and preference cards at morning report.
We are able to print out emergency, add ons and other case updates as they occur at SPD control desk.
Hope this helps!

We have Horizon Surgical Manager from McKesson.
We are able to print out emergency, add ons and other case updates as they occur at SPD control desk.
So when an emergency add-on occurs, how are you notified? Who selects which preference card to print? Does the case have to be scheduled in order to print it, or can you use a generic preference card?
What happens when a case gets scheduled incorrectly? Say it's an open appendectomy scheduled as a lap. How is that handled?
I don't want to reveal too much about our procedures yet becasue I don't want to bias any answers. However, any information people could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Add ons are communicated by the O.R. desk, either by phone or sending down the pick sheet. The specific case must be scheduled by O.R. desk into the system before we can print.
O.R. desk makes all the scheduling decisions, including preference cards. If an error occurs, we repick the case.
