View Full Version : Handling of packages directly out of autoclave
How do I discourage staff members from coming in and literally grabbing things off the hot rack? They are always in a hurry, and don't seem to understand the importance of letting things cool. Immediately handling hot items is a definite no-no. I'll welcome any suggestions. The bad thing is--they are in the habit of doing this, and it will be a hassle trying to break this bad habit. Help!!
I was just at a seminar where the speaker described how she would stop the person with the hot tray and open it up, forcing them to flash it.:) That takes care of the immediate situation, but it will not completely get rid of the practice.
To eliminate the habit, I would go to the OR director and describe why we do not handle hot trays, namely, that it compromises sterility. Be sure to have documentation. Then I would ask for some time to address the OR staff at a meeting to inform them about it and to tell them that any trays that leave your department hot will be opened and flashed.
I would also look into the reasons for needing trays so quickly. Do you need to order more instrument sets? Are there delays in processing that you can eliminate? Can you improve communication about turnovers? Can you work with them to suggest alternative trays that are sterile and cool?
Everyone wants to have sterile instruments for the patient. It is up to us to make sure we follow the best practices. Remember, you cannot disavow responsibility if you knowingly allow someone else to do something you know is wrong.
