I am unfamilar with the Steris Sytem 1 processor and have been asked what is the standard for record keeping for this item (concerning log content). I would also like to know what the standard is for keeping the BI record on this also. Is it the same as other BI records we keep (30 yrs in TX). I have read the policy for our hospital and we are vague. The manufacturer is also vague on details..I feel we should go just like our other logs for point of use like flash units...any help here would be appreciated.

Use your patient medical record number, first four (4) letters of last name and first inital, type of scope, serial # of scope, operators inital (or name), time started. If you want to go a little further; inital of operator (or name) of he or she that removed scope, review printout, time removed. Your endo nurse should document the serial number of the scope used during the procedure. Another method would be to use a patient sticker on the printout, but be very careful of HIPPA violation issues. Record keeping for BI's follow the same as for steam documentation. The 30 year requirement only applies to EO. TDH (Texas Dept of Health) does not require 30 year records for steam nor low temperature liquid sterilization.
