I always thought that when marking peel packs, you should write underneath area where the instrument is.

hmmm...not sure I understand what you are saying. Our guide is generally to either write on the peel pack before putting the instrument in, or write in an area where the instrument isn't in the way to prevent damaging the package. As long as you aren't comprimising the integrity of the package, I'm not sure that where you write matters, as long as you are writing on the plastic side, not the paper side. I have also seen facilities put a piece of tape on the plastic side and write on that.

I understand, and I have always done this, but a nurse asked me to have the staff write on the top so they could see the name when the instrument is filed away in a drawer. That made me look at it in a different light :)

Isn't it funny that even though an item is peel packed and a person could see the instrument inside, we rely so heavily on being able to see the name of the instrument? As a C.S. tech, and as a supervisor, I have seen every instrument in our facility so many times that I know exactly what it's name is, and in most cases what it is used for. It takes an effort for me to remember that the people in the rooms i.e. scrub techs and nurses, don't have the same knowledge.

I don't believe there is a real standard on where to write, I would imagine it depends on what works best for whoever needs to read it.
