Has anyone ever experienced sterilization of exposed x-ray film? We have an ENT doc that uses used film for splinting of the septum in patiens. This temporary splint is removed after 3-5 days. We have already ruled out gas plasma, the current process is steam or SYSTEM-1 processing. Our Radiology director has assured us that it is perfectly alright to process used film in this manner. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter???

Until the maker of the film says you can sterilize it, don't believe anyone else. FDA regulations (21 CFR 820) describe what a manufacturer of medical devices must do to get FDA approval for their device. I would wager the manufacturer of the film did not get FDA approval for their film to be sterilized and used as a splint.

I am going through the process of eliminating processing of unapproved devices at my hospital, as well. My favorite is the toothpicks one ENT doctor wants sterilized in the cap from a saline bottle. Where do people get these ideas?
