What do you feel is an adequate time to clean, decontaminate, wrap and sterilize large loaner trays so they are cool and dry and safe for use?
When loaners come in the same day as surgery, sometimes the O.R Department has unrealistic expectations on time needed to properly process loaners.

In our hospital it takes about 4-5 hours in total for thorough processing of instrument trays.
Here is the process broken down:-
- Trays are inspected for foreign bodies paying close attention to cannulated parts. If needed they are manually washed and brushes inserted into channels.
- Trays are then put through our washer.
- Once the wash is complete the trays are left to cool, then thoroughly dried.
- Trays are then photographed for our records.
- Trays are then wrapped and sterilized.
- After sterilzation and cooling time the instruments are ready for use.
So to summarise it takes about:
1-1 and 1/2 hours to clean the trays
1/2-1 hour to dry and wrap the trays
1 hour to sterilize
1-2 hours to cool down
Hopefully this is of help to you.
