According to the CBSPD, rubber can be sterilized in steam or ETO. However, using rubber bands in a surgical setting may be outside of the manufacturer's intended 'scope' of use for the product.

We do not sterilize rubber bands here in our facility, because we can't guarantee that we have current and specific manufacturer instructions for reprocessing them.

We treat rubber bands the same way we do most other disposable product. We buy sterile rubber bands from hospital suppliers who maintain and document their compliance with the manufacturers and thereby also assume the liability.
