I need to know if it is all cardboard or just exterior shipping cartons that are supposed to be keep out of the sterile processing dept. we have some long time employees that think any cardboard is ok and they cant see what the problem is with it being on the shelves and cutting and tearing it open in the same area that we keep all of our wrapped supplies that will go directly into the or suites.

It is any corrugated cardboard. It can harbor bugs inside.

In a perfect world you should have a breakout room where products are opened and unpacked. No cardboard should be in the sterile storage area. :)

Look at AAMI, 5.9.3.2, Storage facilities, it states that "outside shipping or corrugated cartons should not be used as containers in sterile storage areas. (See also 5.2.1.) That should do it!!!

Is there some way to get a copy of that standard? I attempted to locate it on the AAMI site and could not find it. I also emailed them and have not received any info. thanks

It is in the 2003 Edition of AAMI on page 49 under Storage facilities. It is in the second paragraph of the that section.
