Our delivery sets are set up as a flat tray with a towel cover a needle holder two med cups wrapped in gauze (seperate) and a tissue forcep set out on the tray then, in a hotel pan on the tray we lay out another piece of gauze on the bottem of the pan and the scissors and peons are set on top.My question is the qauze is not used for anything in the set up, so is it really necassary to have them in the set. I asked my Lead why it was set up like this and she said for absorbsion, wouldn't the towel cover be enough for a small set like this? I thought by not using the gauze this would save on cost prep time and waist.

Gauze can help with excess moisture, but it could mess up the count in the room. :( At our facility we recently deleted all gauze, cotton balls, and towels from our sets. Most of these items are purchased already sterile, and are chargeable items. Reusable instrument sets are usually non-charge items, and any disposables included are lost charges. You could save money but not including these in your sets.;)
