We have a policy that there is no drinking or eating in the dept. We have a tech who is telling me he needs to have water with him because his new medication makes him very thirsty. I am not sure if we should allow this. I know he will get his doctor to write him a note. Any one had this come up?

Our policy is no eating or drinking in the SP areas...period.
Your tech should be able to occasionally leave the floor to get a drink if he is thirsty.
If you open the door for exceptions, every individual becomes a special case and you will be forced to allow exceptions for that Happy Meal someone has to eat at the assembly table (with a doctor's note of course..) to keep their blood sugar in check......
JMHO....

kwelch; our policy is the same as spd soup. I totally agree. no exceptions. you would leave the door wide open for other exceptions as mentioned. Let the employee go to the lounge every now and then to get the drink of water.
No exceptions. I would emphasize that this is for his safety. We work with some dangerous germs all around us. You cannot allow eating or drinking around that. You can, and should, allow him to go to the water fountain down the hall. If he has to make so many trips that it interferes with his work, you are not required to accomodate that, however. Even if he has a doctor's note, you are NOT required to accomodate that restriction if it is in violation of company safety policies.
