The hospital I work in wraps most everything in linen . . . always double-wrapped and always in the sequencial manner. The course I had taken taught of the two types of methods in wrapping so I have continually asked the reasoning why the simultaneous wrapping technique is not used at all. I understand the idea of the extra amounts of folds providing better security as far as preventing contamination. My question to nursing was why can't we simultaneous wrap for mayos, light handles, etc.... items that do not come into direct contact with the patient. CT

In AAMI ST79, pages 55 to 61, both type of wrapping techniques are illustrated. You should find out the thread count (TC) of the linens. Way back when, the TC was 140, today’s material might be 288 or some gowns may have water repellant material, both making it tough on the steam to penetrate. Too many folds or layers can be detrimental to the sterilization process. Check with the linen Mfg for recommendations.
