Is there a formula or recommendation to which type of individually packaged instrument/device either should be wrapped in linen or done up in a peel pouch? Currently our department has a 'leave it up to the tech' mentallity which sometimes falls short.
Also, is it okay for a pouch within a pouch for multiple items or heavier items? How about linen in peel pouches? (One of our neighboring facilities double pouches everything more so for the ease of the nursing for aseptic opening)
We are currently trying to stop allowing pouches within trays or within wrapped linen. Can someone explain the why this is not allowed? Thanks. CT

We don't place linen inside our peel pouches only the approved for sterilization paper containers.
Double or peel pouches inside peel pouches are allowed as long as the inside pouch is placed paper against paper and plastic against plastic.
Peel pouches are not advised or appropriate inside wrapped sets or containment devices as they will impede the flow of sterilant and can contribute to wet packs. (AAMI ST 79 section 8.3.4)
Hope this helps!

Thanks. Could you explain your first statement a little more please? Paper containers are what exactly? In the course I took 2 years ago, the text book states that linen could go in peel pouches. (Yes, I'm a newbie to the profession and have a ton of questions!)
I would like to know is there a replacement for a peel pouch inside linen to prevent small items from being lost or dropped at time of opening. I can think of one example is our long, double catheterizing bridge is wrapped in linen with two red rubbers, which were always placed in a peel pouch. Thanks CT

Everyone on this forum was a newbie to the profession at some point and needed advice, so don't feel you are alone and ask away!
We use the approved for sterilization paper pouches in varying sizes available from healthmark. We stopped using linen because of the concern for lint in the sterile field.
I think in your situation the paper pouches would also be useful inside wrapped linen to contain small items for aseptic presentation.
