Mid-Ohio Central Service Professionals had our first 2011 seminar Saturday, March 26 at Mt. Carmel East Siegel Center. Susan Salisbury, Ohio Health employee physical therapist spoke on whole body care. With SPD professionals having such a physical job we are so fortunate to have Susan helping us to take care of our bodies.

Dennis Murphy from Columbus State Community College Surgery Technician program provided a great two hour education on what an OR room is all about and how important SPD is to a positive OR procedure.
What do you do when you have a steam sterilization failure? What does a positive BI or a failed chemical indicator mean when your sterilizer cycle printout shows the correct parameters of time and temperature were met? Chip Moore helped explain these along with many other steam sterilization processes. Sterilization is complex and monitoring the process is an important step in assuring sterile instruments.
Rafael Fernandez, Ohio Sterile Processing Association President was our last speaker of the day. Rafael spoke on the goals of the state association along with the efforts of state-wide certification. At the time of MOCSP’s seminar, Ohio is hopeful to have the certification bill introduced in the House of Representatives soon. New Jersey still remains the only state to require certification of all SPD technicians, but Ohio is still hopeful of achieving state certification in the near future.
Saturday, October 29 is the date for OCSPA’s next seminar. While still in the planning stage, we hope to have an OR doctor and OR nurse to tell us what is expected from SPD from a nurse and doctors stand point. We hope to also offer an Infection Control nurse as a speaker. Explaining instrument maintaince and care and if instruments are not maintained properly will lead to poor function and replacement. It is planned to have someone speak on this as well.
Don’t forget about Ohio’s state wide conference to be held at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio September 30-October 2, 2011!
Hope to see you at one of these educational functions and if you have any questions, you are welcome to contact me at mocsppresident@gmail.com
Enjoy the Spring Weather!
